Overview
The UK defence industry is the second largest in the world behind the USA. The market is broad based and includes both manufacture and service. Employing over 120,000 people, and having grown by 8% pa since 2001, this sector is dominant in servicing the UK Defence needs as well as playing a part in most major defence initiatives around the World.
However, over recent years the defence industry in the UK has been under increasing pressure to demonstrate significant cost savings to MoD organisations, such as the DE&S.
With limited defence budgets, competition from overseas suppliers and an over capacity within many sectors of the industry, the defence industry is being forced to find new ways of reducing the total cost of ownership of military platforms, from first build, through life to disposal.
The publication of the Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) reinforces that the defence industry will have to re-shape itself, to improve productivity and to adjust to lower production levels once the current major equipment projects have been completed.
Newton has extensive experience within the defence industry, including working with DML on the Submarine refit programme and VT Shipbuilding on the Type 45 destroyer build programme. We focus on increasing productivity with the manufacturing, design and facilities management areas of our clients, in both manual ‘jobbing’ environments and automated production lines.
Recent projects have ranged from improving efficiency of welding teams to solving quality defects on composite aircraft components to doubling the output rate of a steel panel production line.
Our consultants are security cleared and are familiar with the protocol for working in 'sensitive' areas.
