Meeting project deadlines within labour budget saves £350,000

Background
A large defence contractor, providing on the job support for maintenance activities was struggling to carry out all the tasks requested of it without excessive overtime. This overtime was becoming unsustainable, relying only on the good will of the workers and in addition, desirable routine checks were being missed.

The Approach
One consultant ran a 25 week project with the local team to understand and solve the problems which caused the crews to lose time. Following the assessment it was found that around 30% of people’s time was being lost due to co-ordination with the tradesmen they were supporting and this became the focus of the project .

Project Structure
By developing a simple to use process for determining the weekly demand on their services, the team began to get control of their overtime. Then, by planning individual jobs on a daily basis, and challenging excessive requests for support, they were able to fully service the demand and further reduce the overtime to a manageable level.

The Result
The final reduction in overtime led to a saving of £350,000 per year which was enhanced further by the team some time after the project finished. In addition, all routine checks have been completed since.
